Wednesday Quirks [#3], wedding anniversary soon!

Hump day! Hurray. But I’m getting my booty workout in tomorrow, so I guess I’ll celebrate a day late.

watermelon_toomuch

Me right now- too much watermelon. source.

Just got finished grilling out and eating a delicious dinner of center cut pork chops, brussel sprouts, Kettle chips (Red Curry flavor), and oh-so-much watermelon. Jeremy has his pork chop grilling skills down to an art – I promise to get photos next time but completely devoured everything before I even thought about it. We were super hungry tonight. But what really got me was the watermelon. I grabbed a huge one for $3.99 at Fresh Market, along with the pork chops, and I think maybe I felt obligated to finish too much of it. haha. So now I’m sleepy with a watermelon belly.

Quirky/Weirdness Wednesday #3kiwi

  • I eat kiwis whole. Furry skin and all. According to the California Kiwifruit Commission, it’s completely safe to eat kiwi skin. unless you are allergic, of course. More fiber for me. ūüôā
  • I hate waking up & moving without ¬†a kick in the¬†butt with caffeine. It gets¬†a¬†bit¬†pathetic but I guess it’s how I’m wired…
  • Even weirder… I sleep better when I have caffeine. I recently cut caffeine for a month and had the WORST insomnia!
  • I have a nervous habit of picking at my cuticles on my thumbs.
  • In middle school and maybe some of high school, I had friends who called me “Buns”…. Because I was obsessed with nice buns.
  • ¬†I got married next to dolphins at Marineland in St. Augustine, Florida.¬†(Did I mention that¬†I’m obsessed with dolphins and the ocean already?). Since our anniversary is coming up on the 15th, I figured I’d get this one in here. ‚̧

Jeremy and I are still trying to figure out our 2 year anniversary plans, but I’m sure we’;; enjoy whatever we come up with. We’re usually pretty laid back about it. For now, my mind is on enjoying Erin’s wedding this weekend in North Carolina! I haven’t seen her in so long, but I’m super excited for her! Congrats to my blonde twin! ‚̧

Erin and I waaay back in the day ‚̧

Hope you all had a good one! What did you do for your anniversary(ies)?!

Pizza Party; Weekend+End of Week in Review

varuni_us_smGood evening and hello – long time no post, I know.

I’ve been a bit busy¬†with working and spring cleaning but you haven’t missed much… except some yummy pizza, workouts, lots of walking, & not so fun cleaning.

Thursday РWork followed by a patio party hosted by Scoutmob varunipizza_wr_smat Varuni Napoli

in Midtown Atlanta, near the Ansley Mall area/Piedmont Park. This place offers outstanding and authentic Neapolitan pizzas; they even import their flour, olive oil, olives, some cured meats, tomatoes, and buffalo mozzarella (my favorite!). Seasonal¬†produce & herbs are fresh and locally sourced, and the dough is naturally fermented. If you couldn’t tell, I’m in love with real Italian pizza & their One Year Anniversary Patio Party was a perfect opportunity to sample more of their pizzas & handcrafted drinks.

varunitrees_smThe evening was fun – plenty¬†of pizza choices and lots of eager people to feed. We slightly¬†wished we had not¬†stayed¬†on the patio¬†once the sun lowered¬†due to some pesky gnats, but we still didn’t regret our time there. The pizza (and apps+meatballs!) were plentiful, the drinks were refreshing (I mean, how unique is an Arugula spritzer!?), and it just reinforced the fact that Varuni Napoli is one of my¬†favorite pizza spots in town ever.varuni_gift_sm

Also, check out the view when we looked up! Trees and cute¬†lights strung above!¬†Gorgeous, and very romantic come sunset! We also got a unique¬†little gift bag with a red pepper stitched on (right)¬†before we left along with a¬†perfect cannoli, which is one of my favorite desserts, hands down. ‚̧

Friday brought more work, cleaning

& a sweaty buddy workout with Jeremy & a friend. After a walk to the gym and a warm-up, the workout consisted of:
060615_sleeeeed4 Rounds: 5 Chin-ups (from full range of motion, dead hang), 2 “sled” pushes, 100 mountain climbers (50 per leg), and 10 Thrusters (I used 20 lb dumbbells- a weight that was safe but challenging in reps 9, 10). This one left some puddles of sweat from all of us.

So our “real” push sled was stolen from our gym late last year. I was super bummed out because sled sprints are one of my favorite things to include in workouts. Well, my genius husband decided to put a plate on a¬†Bosu ball to push across the turf strip… and voila! We have our “sled;” it’s not quite the same but definitely gets the job done (and may be even harder!) ūüėČ

Saturday– Jeremy & I walked a lot! The FIFA Champions League final

060715_citywalkingwas scheduled¬†so we decided to walk a couple miles to Taco Mac Metropolis to catch the Juventus vs Barcelona matchup. I actually wanted Juventus to win – they put up a great fight but in the end, missed too many chances & sailed too many shots over the goal. Oh well… Barca wins again but at least I can respect Messi as one of the best footballers to have ever graced the field. We put in a few miles walking, and check out the sunshine in my city ‚̧

Today i woke up early (couldn’t stay asleep) and got a cardio/sprint session in. What else would i do?

060715_pool_smAfter breakfast, Jeremy & I spent about 45 minutes by the pool before a grocery run and Goodwill stop to drop of some of the crap stuff we dug up while cleaning.  Afterwards, I snuck in a leg workout (deadlifts, weighted step-ups, and lunges) before getting this post finished.

Confession… I¬†actually sneaked in¬†some¬†relaxing pool+reading times on multiple occasions¬†this week (I know, shame on me for not using my downtime to update sooner). Don’t worry, I have a few things¬†in store for the upcoming week.¬†I’ve also just¬†finished trying all of the Krush bar flavors I got to try, so the review is coming up soon!

Do you have any gym trade-offs/tricks that worked for you when you didn’t have the right equipment available to do the exercise(s) you wanted to do? What are your go to workouts/exercises?

Aight, I am  to watch the NBA game, hope everyone has enjoyed their weekend, too!

Wednesday Quirks #2

crazydriversIt’s Wednesday and we are more than halfway done with the normal work¬†week! So I have my Wednesday workout and another weird list for you… Speaking of weird, we had a car go through the fence at our apartment complex today. I think there was a police chase involved, but I could be wrong. Regardless, the roads were wet and the fence and brick columns definitely stopped this guy… That’s car #2 in less that 12 months, in nearly the same spot (the last one was Thanksgiving morning really early, around 5 AM). It’s crazy how bad people can drive in this city,- the drivers are scary sometimes, even though I love Atlanta.. Anyways,¬†it’ll be a quick post tonight – workout first:

fsquatWednesday Workout – mostly lower body to build that booty for HUMP DAY!

  • 1 mile walk to the gym &¬†Kettlebell swing warm-up w/35 lb kettlebell
  • Barbell warm-up¬†followed by Front Squats – 95×10,105×8,115×8, 125×6, 135×5, 145×3, 145×3 then a quick every minute on the minute for 5 minutes with 135×3 followed by a cooldown with decreasing front squat weights.
  • Deadlift¬†135×6, 145×6, 145×5 (mostly to give the hamstrings some easy work)¬†followed by TRX single-leg lunges

My workout was followed by a steak burrito bowl from Moes (thanks to my husband) with all of the fixings, including guacamole ‚̧

So I figured I’d stick with my weird theme for Wednesday’s so far an give you another list of some of my weird tendencies/habits…errr… gifts. ūüôā

  • I talk to my plants, like when I water them… especially when I am home alone.
  • I’m blind in my right eye (my brain doesn’t like to use it) and constantly run into things on my right side.
  • Despite that, I am a¬†freakishly good shot with rubber bands.
  • The first time I saw the Count Censored video, I almost peed myself laughing. I have a terrible sense of humor. (warning: explicit language…)
  • Did I mention my obsession with dolphins before?phinsdraw

What “weirdnesses” do you have? (See, I made a new word!)

20 Questions Tuesday

060215sunsetGood evening!

Can we take a moment to admire the gorgeousness of the sunset in Midtown Atlanta, tonight? Alright, done? Good! So I found a fun 20 Questions survey that I thought would be fun to share. Hope you enjoy!

1) What is one of your favorite ways to spend a Saturday?

  • playing soccer games!
  • working out with Jeremy (love our buddy workouts)
  • reading by the pool in the summer

2) List your top three favorite TV shows.

    • The Vikings (History Channel)
    • Archer
    • Family Guy

3) Would you rather be in pictures or take them?

Take them, but it’s fun when someone else has the camera every once in a while. I always forget to get photos of Jeremy & I when we are out.

4) Why do you blog?

It gives me a place to put some of my creative energy to use, and I can both keep track of & share the things I try with people who may be interested!

5) Share five websites that you visit regularly…

  • Suppversity
  • WordPress hah
  • Weather¬†channel¬†(does the¬†phone app count?)
  • Pulse reader
  • Facebook

6) If you could have lunch with one¬†two persons from your Twitter list who would it be? ūüėČ

@ProfDrAndro – Adel Moussa of Suppversity. A genius regarding things fitness & nutrition.

also … Ingrid Visser (@orcaingrid) – she researches & swims with the killer whales in New Zealand

  • organic cream top yogurts, especially from Kalona
  • candied ginger
  • beef jerky

9) Which three material possessions would you struggle to live without?

Cintiq tablet, my Canon Digital Rebel, and mascara.

10) What’s your favorite drink?

Alcoholic? Beer Рgood craft beers like Dogfish Head Indian Brown. Oh, not alcoholic? Water and Hot teas of all sorts.

dinner_05021511) Do you enjoy cooking?

More shy/introverted than outgoing but I thrive getting in my time out with people, too, even if it’s just at the gym. Large crowds make me nervous, though… (cough Dekalb Farmers Market, especially on the weekend, makes me feel like I am about to have a panic attack).

15) If you could change one thing about yourself, what would you change?

Weekend Recap: Atlanta Food & Wine Festival

atl_afwf2015The Atlanta Food & Wine Festival was this weekend and I had the opportunity to attend the Saturday classes and explore the tasting tents for some of the best food (& booze) I’ve ever had… It’s such an insanely perfect experience for any foodie (and don’t worry, I got over 16,000 steps in throughout my day) ūüėČ

A recap of AFWF2015!

On Saturday, I got to attend three classes that were held at the Loew’s Hotel in beautiful Midtown, Atlanta:bbq (2)
  • At 10 AM I attended the¬†Leftover BBQ
talk by Chris Lilly, owner of Big Bob Gibson BBQ in Decatur, Alabama. This was definitely a change of pace from my typical breakfast but so so good.

Pictured is the BBQ smoked chicken salad, smoked pork shoulder tortilla with Serrano pepper coleslaw, & BBQ gumbo.

The smoked bbq chicken salad was phenomenal, but both the BBQ gumbo and smoked pork shoulder tortilla were delicious, too! You can read more about Chris Lilly here: http://atlfoodandwinefestival.com/talent/alabama/chris-lilly/

  • IMG_20150530_180750The 11:30 presentation was¬†Trash Fish: A Chef’s Treasure, presented by¬†¬†Bryan Caswell,¬†Kevin Johnson¬†&¬†PJ Stoops.¬†This was my favorite presentation by topic, especially with my interest and background in marine biology. The presenters did a wonderful job promoting seafood sustainability, and emphasized that the¬†by-catch¬†from the fishing industry, or “trash fish,” can be¬†equally delicious (or MORE so) and 20150530_121042 (2)comparable to the “crowd¬†pleasing” fish like halibut, salmon, and red snapper. I also loved the unique dishes, especially the fried fish skins and bones (using the whole animal, no waste! pictured above). The fried fish tails (pictured right) were surprisingly succulent & also incredible.¬†

  • Fact v. Fi(sh)tion, presented by¬†Derek Emerson, Spike Gjerde¬†& Ryan Prewitt,¬†was the final presentation before I headed out to the tasting tents. These guys were also big on seafood sustainability and building relationships with the fishers and guys selling oyster_afwf2015you their hard-earned seafood, and the dishes did not disappoint. We started off with¬†sustainable¬†farmed oysters (SEX DRIVE UP) while the chefs cooked up snapper, filling the room with the most mouthwatering aromas. For the first time I tried a whole fried soft shelled crab (incredible¬†but¬†not¬†pictured), and I was completely surprised that you could eat the entire crab, even the claws! The red snapper (also not¬†pictured)was finally served on a bed of ¬†at the end of the presentation, and was to die for! Unfortunately, because the presentation had run a bit late, Jeremy and I had to bolt out to catch my family in the line for the tasting tents.

Weekend Link Out Рsome research I think you should read!

Delayed Umbilical Cord Clamping May Benefit Children Years Later The World Health Organization has endorsed waiting to clamp the umbilical cord for at least one minute after a baby is born. РI thought that this would be worth the share, especially for mothers to be.
